We will be exploring and sketching on foot. Each day we will walk a certain route chosen to reveal the history, architecture, cultural heritage, craft, and local life of the city. The routes will not be long, nor strenuous, yet rich in beauty to take in. The emphasis is on slowing down and getting close enough to arrive at a state of meditative observation and delight in the scenery. Its stunning autumn landscape of vineyards, almond groves, scenic villages, sacred sites, and rich heritage of stories and legends makes it the perfect place for wandering, slowing down, contemplating and sketching.

Your guide

Your instructor is Cecilia Simonyi, urban sketcher, cultural anthropologist, a passionate walker, children’s book illustrator and writer, and art teacher. Her teaching experience and illustrative approach will shape this sketching workshop in a way that it is suitable for both beginner and advanced sketchers. There will be foundational lessons and demos on building up a sketching practice from scratch, but she will also teach some of her favourite graphic/illustration techniques, which may open new doors to sketchers on any level.

Her strength is experimenting with different techniques, “gathering” what is around, and applying it into the sketches. The techniques she teaches are simple, playful, rooted in ancient graphic traditions, and always building on the surrounding landscape.
