We will be exploring and sketching on foot. Each day we will walk a certain route chosen to reveal the history, architecture, cultural heritage, craft, and local life of the city. The routes will not be long, nor strenuous, yet rich in beauty to take in. The emphasis is on slowing down and getting close enough to arrive at a state of meditative observation and delight in the scenery. Its stunning autumn landscape of vineyards, almond groves, scenic villages, sacred sites, and rich heritage of stories and legends makes it the perfect place for wandering, slowing down, contemplating and sketching.

A week for yourself and your sketching

  • Day 1: Arrival to Budapest, welcome dinner

    Day 2: Sketching in Budapest

    • Morning: sketching walin the medieval Castle of Buda. Workshop with pencils and markers, learning techniques for finding the starting points to a sketch, creating the best composition, simplifying a complex view.

    • Afternoon: travel to Lake Balaton, settle in at our accommodation.

    • Evening: Introduction evening with a glass of local wine: telling each other about ourselves through our sketches and stories. Orientation talk on Walking and Sketching, the concept of the Wanderlust, the program of the next days.

Day 3-4-5: Morning Balaton sketch walk. Open afternoon with program proposals. Evening dinner together to share the day’s sketches and stories.

    Day 6:

    • Morning: breakfast and closing, transport back to Budapest

    • Optional Balaton sketching walk for those still around.

  • Each day will contain a morning session, when we will be learning a new concept/approach to walking and sketching - and then apply it in a sketchwalk, together.

Afternoons are open with a number of different routes and programs offered. Participants are free to decide the direction of their own wandering, one by one or in small groups - and practice the techniques/approaches learnt that day, or sketch their own way, or have a rest.

We will close the days with sharing the day’s sketches and experiences, dinner and rest.

  • The main technique I will teach on the Wanderlust sketching tour is cianotype. Cianotype is an ancient photographical technique which creates magical blue prints using only sunlight. This technique offers a wide range of possibilities to incorporate shapes, natural objects found during our wanderings. It is fun, and it will add a surprising, adventitious bit to your art process. We will explore how this technique works, how it can be incorporated into sketching, and experiment with different ways of applying it.

Depending on time and interest of the group, other illustrative techniques may also be tasted during the sketching tour.

Your guide

Your instructor is Cecilia Simonyi, urban sketcher, cultural anthropologist, a passionate walker, children’s book illustrator and writer, and art teacher. Her teaching experience and illustrative approach will shape this sketching workshop in a way that it is suitable for both beginner and advanced sketchers. There will be foundational lessons and demos on building up a sketching practice from scratch, but she will also teach some of her favourite graphic/illustration techniques, which may open new doors to sketchers on any level.

Her strength is experimenting with different techniques, “gathering” what is around, and applying it into the sketches. The techniques she teaches are simple, playful, rooted in ancient graphic traditions, and always building on the surrounding landscape.
